Balderton, Coddington & Barnby, 06 March 2025 – This World Book Day, Cllr Emma Oldham (Green Party) is taking bold action to address alarming literacy statistics by launching a community-led reading and writing initiative. The scheme aims to support families most in need, helping children access the books and writing materials essential for their learning journeys.
The latest National Literacy Trust report reveals a worrying trend:
- Two in three children and young people do not enjoy reading in their free time – the lowest level in nearly two decades.
- One in eight children in high-poverty areas don’t own a single book.
- Less than three in ten enjoy writing for pleasure.
Determined to change this, Cllr Oldham has partnered with Coddington Primary School, Balderton Parish Council, and local community groups to launch book and stationery donation points across the area. Pre-loved and new books and magazines, alongside writing materials, can be donated to help ensure every child has access to inspiring stories and essential tools.
How it works
Over the next month, donations will be collected before families in need can register via a simple online form to receive free literacy packs. Staff at Coddington Primary School and Chuter Ede Balderton will help validate and distribute these packs, ensuring they reach those who need them most, including home-educated children.
Momentum is already building
The initiative received its first wave of donations from the Coddington Rainbows, who enthusiastically filled a box with books and stationery to kickstart the scheme this week. Additionally, Balderton Parish Council has become the first confirmed donation point, located at Balderton Village Hall (Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to noon).
“This initiative is about more than just books – it’s about unlocking opportunities, sparking curiosity, and ensuring no child is left behind due to financial barriers,” says Cllr Emma Oldham. “All children deserve the chance to explore new worlds through reading and writing, and this scheme will provide essential support for families facing challenges.”
“It has been truly heartwarming to receive support from parish councils, community groups, and schools, turning this into a collective community effort. Seeing everyone’s generosity come together through the power of words is incredibly inspiring. I’m so thankful.” She adds.
How you can help
Cllr Oldham is calling on local businesses, schools, and community members to get involved by hosting a donation box (provided by Cllr Oldham) or donating books and writing accessories.
